With her? Connor blushed a tad as James spoke and more when he turned. They were in a dire situation and that man was dying but that came to mind? That? He honestly hadn't given it a thought, though as he did it seemed appealing. Before his thoughts amounted to anything, Deryn returned. "Nice. Looks like you gave it no quarter. You know, we can cook snake. I don't know if it'll be any good but I know we could eat it." Save their rations for later while they ate the food that could spoil, now. "Your brother is drawing up a map for us to get through the woods. And we didn't kill each other, so there's that." He smiled, and you could see it in the crinkles at the corners of his eyes.

"Yeah. That was my thought. Might as well save our rations for when there isn't food readily available." Setting down the snake, she gathered some loose dead grasses for kindling while Connor kept speaking. "That's alright. Is he not going with us, though? Wouldn't I be better to have a guide than a map? Less chance of getting lost," she remarked thoughtfully whilst sparking the fire with the flint provided in her pack. "I guess you prep a snake like a fish, then. I've not much experience with snakes, but fish are pretty easy to skin once you know how to do it," she babbled right before chopping the poor creature's head head off in one clean hacking motion. "The blood doesn't really bother me anymore... Is that bad?"

"No. Think he said he needs to stay behind and finish his research. But I think we'll be fine enough on our own." Connor said, bringing out one of their tents. He opened it and started to assemble it across the campfire from James' tent. Deryn mentioned the blood and he shrugged. "It's probably a good thing, actually. The way I see it, we're on a bloody road. The both of us will have to get used to it eventually. Otherwise, we might as well walk away." The tent slowly rose as he set the poles into the frame. "I'm curious how that snake will taste though. I mean, it slides on it's belly everywhere so it must be tender. Or maybe it's stringy..." His train of thought didn't go anywhere but he was just talking to fill the space. When the tent was up and finished, he stood back and announced quietly, "Done." Wasn't exactly an accomplishment, though.

Deryn skinned and gutted the snake as best she could as Connor spoke and she nodded along, not paying a ton of attention. Placing the snake on the fire, and hummed and nodded a bit more. "Yeah, that's nice..." Suddenly, her head snapped up and she looked up at Connor and blinked. "What? Oh, nevermind. I wasn't paying attention, it's pretty obvious. Anyhow, we should only set up one tent for tonight if we're going to be in such a rush tomorrow morning. What do you think?"

"I think that's fine." Connor said. "It'll be snug in the tent together but at least we'll be warm. Way warmer than the apartment was." That mattress might have been comfortable but the only saving grace the first in that place was Deryn's body heat. There had been a draft and there was so much empty space, there was no way just the two of them could heat that apartment up. Tents were small and sealed. "Speaking of tomorrow, which way should we head? I mean, I'm not even sure what there is on the other side of the forest. Let alone if we should be heading towards it. I haven't been in the area for long." There could be a checkpoint, or a garrison, or it might just be a few merchants. Or nothing. It could be a countless number of things. "Because there's no point in rushing when you're going nowhere." Yeah, they should keep moving but aimlessly wandering was dangerous.

"Yeah. That too." When Connor kept speaking, she nodded along to show that she recognized his points without having to say anything. Thinking was really what she needed to do. "Well, I have some friends west of here that live on a farm. If we get there before the news of out alleged crime, we should be able to get shelter and help from them. As long as we're still unsure of what to do, we should try to gain allies to smuggle us along away from the authorities." Poking at the snake with a stick, she shrugged. "While we're there, I think I might be able to pull some strings with the leader of their militia so he can train us some. They're a small country village and the king refused to protect them from threats with his royal army. They are probably likely to believe us because of their predisposition. If we're going to pick a fight with the government, we're not going to half-ass it."

"I like the way you think." Connor said. "It would be nice to have some proper training for once." He might hit something with that rifle but he wasn't hitting twice in a row. He sat by the fireside and agreed, "So it's settled. At light we'll head West and see what we can get." It was starting to sink in that he was being outcast from society. It was a horrible feeling. One sat sat in your gut and hung out on your liver, promising to be out by the hour but ends up crashing on your spleen for days. That kind of horrible. "Deryn. Do you think we can actually do this?" What better time to have second thoughts about something than at the beginning. "That we can somehow beat our government, just us?"

"Yeah. It's going to be hard to learn everything we need to learn in a short time, but anything it better than nothing." Picking the snake from the fire, she ripped the snake in two and handed one half to Connor so he could eat it. "Mhm. Hopefully, we can get there by tomorrow night. If we can, there'll be a more certain supply of food so we can save our rations and water. And maybe we could do some work for people around town to make money if we should need it." Taking a bite of the snake, she found that it wasn't terribly stringy or tough, but the muscle on the sides of the serpent were a little bit harder to chew. When Connor spoke again, she gulped hard and looked at him with a slight smile. Wiping her mouth with her arm, she sighed and chuckled. "I'll bring down the oppressive government and clear our names or die trying. How is that?" Taking another bite, she mumbled through her small amount of food. "Besides, isn't it better to die for a cause you believe in than die for someone else's actions?"

"It's better not to die at all." Connor pointed out as he took the snake. Ugh. It was disgusting but it was cooked and it was food. He suffered through about a fourth of the snake before his gag reflex was protesting too much. "That's kinda the thing, though. I kinda don't wanna die at all. I know I can't wish my way out but part of me just wants to give up." Who wouldn't? The odds seemed a little impossible. The government had endless resources compared to their meager abilities. "But I probably won't get anywhere griping like this, huh?"

Deryn let Connor talk out his fears of dying to her and just smiled, shaking her head. "That's the thing, isn't it? You're so scared of dying that you forget to live." Standing up, the redheaded woman circled around so she stood behind Connor and wrapped her arms around him. Whispering into his ear, her voice was as soft and quiet as a delicate white flower. "Live, Connor Plume. You're in a forest with a woman you just met who's alright with sleeping in the same tent as you, not to mention being on the run from the authorities. Don't tell me you're not even a little excited." Taking a small pause just to let her words sink in, she let the silence get thick in the air. When she broke it again, her voice was almost impossibly quiet. "Take advantage of the opportunity you've been given."
